Blonde desk turns blue

linda_neff_mug_2016It’s been quite a while since I’ve had time to paint a piece for Studio. Between custom paint orders and developing classes I don’t get a lot of free time. This desk has been sitting around the Studio for quite a while and I really wanted to work on it. I found an inspiration piece on Pinterest and knew exactly what I was going to do with it.

My inspiration piece was a shabby white and, honestly, after cleaning and scuff sanding I primed and started painting it white. But when I finished painting the drawers it was beginning to look pretty boring with all that white; new plan. I headed to the paint cabinet and found three cans of left over paint in various shades of blue. I custom mixed till I came up with the perfect color for this two-piece desk and hutch.

The backing on the hutch had holes cut into it for cords so I removed it and replaced with new beadboard. Every edge got a heavy-handed distressing then I stained over the paint before sealing the entire piece. It looks like a totally different piece with its fresh new paint color.

This piece would look just as good in a kitchen displaying pretty pitchers and dishes as it would in a study or bedroom loaded with books and photos. It’s for sale and in the Studio.

Studio continues to evolve

We often get asked just what is Green Door Studio. Truth be told, we don’t really have it figured out quite yet. We’re still evolving.

When Rachel and I decided to open this business a little over two years ago our thoughts were that we would offer classes and sell our painted furniture. Over time the business has changed a bit but remains pretty close to what we had in mind.

We still scour estate sales and auctions for pieces to redo and now we’ve expanded to custom painting.

dining_set_green_door_studio_720The custom painting has kept me really busy lately and I have commissions waiting to come in well into February.

Green_Door_Studio_snowman_class_2Classes run the gamut – from how to make a burlap wreath and ATC’s to art journaling, scrapbooking, card-making and mixed media. Students recently learned to use a Styrofoam ball, plaster gauze and an old bed spring to build an adorable snowman with tons of personality!

At the end of October we made the decision to move our business after scouting out a variety of locations. We didn’t go far – just about three miles North but our space is more open and nice and bright. We really like our current home.

Green_Door_Studio_snowman_classThe classroom area is spacious and roomy. It seats up to 10 comfortably and is still cozy and intimate – just the way I like it!

Green Door Studio is not your typical cutesy home decor/gift/craft store/studio. There’s no pretty fairy lights hanging from the ceiling and no mood lighting. We cram it in and sometimes I’ll admit it ain’t real pretty.

We sell some craft supplies – inks, glues, paper pads – Kaisercraft and Graphic45 with some Prima in the mix.

You’ll find furniture pieces – mostly good, solid, vintage project pieces (take as is or we’ll paint it for you) and painted pieces. The odd little piece of this or that comes and goes – rusty bed springs, brass pieces, vintage bingo numbers and the like.

To keep up with all the goings-on for Green Door Studio check our newsletter (in the sidebar above) and head over to our Facebook page and give us a ‘like.’

Facing the changes

20140903_101812My gosh! Where does the time go? Thanksgiving is here and it seems like just yesterday I was out West on vacation with the old guy. Thanksgiving dinner this year is at Rachel and Kevin’s. The newlyweds are hosting a family dinner for the lot of us.

It’s been a crazy busy Fall since we made the decision to move the business. We pulled off the move to our new location and with the help of family and some good friends we were able to get the joint organized and up and running without closing for even one day!

I’m back on schedule with the custom painting jobs and Rachel is back to painting pieces from her home. Classes have been running smoothly and you’ll see more pop up on the Calendar soon.

We’ve made some social media changes by eliminating our web site and just sticking with a blog and our Facebook page. You’ll still find the link to our Calendar and Newsletter here on the blog sidebar.

Please have a wonderful Thanksgiving day however you choose to spend it. Be safe and enjoy!
